2. Qualitative Research

Qualitative research is defined as a market research method that focuses on obtaining data through open-ended and conversational communication. This method is not only about “what” people think but also “why” they think so. We frame the questions so that the response goes beyond a simple ‘Yes’ or ‘No’. The moderator keeps personal biases aside to get true opinion about the project focus. The data collection process employs recordings and elaborate interview notes followed by expert data analysis.

Qualitative research is based on the disciplines of social sciences like psychology, sociology, and anthropology. Therefore, the qualitative research methods allow for in-depth and further probing and questioning of respondents based on their responses, where the interviewer/researcher also tries to understand their motivation and feelings. Understanding how your audience takes decisions can help derive conclusions in market research.

If the qualitative data is collected through a focus group or one-to-one discussion, there will be handwritten notes or video recorded tapes. If there are recording, they are transcribed before beginning the process of data analysis.

Methodology
  • Conducting in-depth interviews – Open-ended questionnaires
  • Online survey
  • Focus on qualitative observation (deals with the 5 major sensory organs and their functioning – sight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing. This doesn’t involve measurements or numbers but instead characteristics.)

As the name suggests, this survey uses the traditional paper and pencil approach. Many would believe that paper surveys are a thing of the past.

3. Telephonic Surveys:

Researchers conduct these over telephones. Respondents need to answer questions related to the research topic by the researcher.

4. One-to-One interviews:

The one-to-one interview helps researchers gather information or data directly from a respondent.

5. Cross-sectional studies

This type offers a researcher a quick summary of what respondents think at that given time.

6. Longitudinal surveys

Longitudinal surveys are those surveys that help researchers to make an observation and collect data over an extended period. There are three main types of longitudinal studies: trend surveys, panel surveys, cohort surveys.

7. Retrospective survey:

A retrospective survey is a type of study in which respondents answer questions to report on events from the past. By deploying this kind of survey, researchers can gather data based on past experiences and beliefs of people.
